History

The Malta Photographic Society was formed in 1961, although the island had enjoyed many established and highly skilled photographers since the early days of photography.

The Society has organized many competitions for in house development of it’s members skills as well as for other organizations in relationship to their own requirements.

The Society ran for a number of years an International Colour Slide Competition but this fell by the wayside when the interest in slides waned in shadow of developments in digital photography.

We are now moving on and by utilizing the web and digital art form we are now joining the movement to online digital only international competition.

Calling on the traditions of the Islands History and relationship with the Knights of Malta we are enhancing the experience of international competitions by introducing the highest award for our competition coming from our history of the Knights of Malta — the Maltese Falcon.

A Maltese Falcon was traditionally given to the King of Spain by the Knights of Malta as rent for the Island of Malta.

We are now reviving this tradition. Not by giving the King of Spain a Maltese Falcon, but by using the Maltese Falcon as a prestigious award for the highest achievement in photography.

This award will be limited in it’s use and only given in very select circumstance’s to the highest standard of the photographic art.

The winner of this award will have their achievement recorded in a Roll of Honour of Master Photographers, will receive a presentation scroll certificate commemorating the award and a replica of the Maltese Falcon Trophy for their own keeping.
